I'm not a huge fan of the local wines but they must be ok to some as they are all still in business. The place is the annapolis valley if you want to actually go to the wineries. There is one in a place called malagash(sp) and then there is one in grand pre and one in wolfville. grand pre has been there a long time and has had several owners, don't know what name they use now. The one in malagash is Jost vineyards and I don't know the name of the one in wolfville, it is rather new. There are over 200 acres of vineyard in the valley( that's an old figure). It is noteworthy to mention that grand pre and wolfville are about a 5 minute drive from each other and just off the highway to the valley. The liquor stores stock the jost stuff but some of the others are too small to find in the big stores, however, we do have a couple of specialty places in HFX that would have some.

A thriving wine industry in Nova Scotia, huh? That's interesting! I've never had any NS wine before. I am probably going to spend a week in Maine later in the autumn; perhaps I can take a side trip to NS on the ferry, and check out some wine.

As far growing my own grapes - I do intend on trying something, someday - but seriously, just don't have the property to do it yet.

What I'd really like to do is have some property where I can grow my own gooseberries and black currants for my winemaking!

Well, our growing season here in NS is shorter than yours and we have a thriving wine industry. Also concordes are pretty hardy, you can plant them as a hedge along your property line, might get enough for one decent batch per year and the rest you can use to make grappa.(haha) I would not advise the grappa, horrid stuff.

Small world! Yes, I live in Orangeville. I'd love to try growing my own grapes - but two problems:

I don't have much of a backyard.

I wonder if Orangeville's winters are too harsh. Although only an hour or so from the Niagara Peninsula, we're up on the escarpment, where the wild winds blow from the west and north west, straight off of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. As well, our growing season is shorter than that south of us. We even had some snow flurries today!! On this May longweekend, believe it or not. I think we hit a high of about 4C.

Say hi to your sis for me! :)

Hey I just hit the winemakers thingie you have there and it appears you either live in or at least shop in orangeville. I live in NS but I have been there, as I have a sister who lives there. Nice place, I am surprised you have not tried growing some of your own grapes, concordes do make a decent wine.
