Carboy

Also called a demijohn, a carboy is usually made of glass but sometimes plastic and is used for the secondary fermentation or bulk aging of wine or beer. The word “carboy” comes from the Arabic word, “qarraba” which means “big jug.” Generally, the term carboy is usually associated with the 5 Imperial gallon glass “jugs” that are used in home winemaking or brewing however other sizes are also available. Carboys are sometimes also referred to as “secondary fermenters.”
